Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.
The goal of this program is to attract and train the best postdoctoral fellows in the area of quantum science and engineering. Unlike the present situation, the spectrum of research possibilities for these research fellows will not be limited by the constraints of research contracts and grants. The postdocs will be free to move among the various labs (optics, solid-state, atomic, device engineering).
The postdoctoral fellows in theoretical subjects will be encouraged to work with several faculty from various disciplines, bringing these communities together. The future of this field demands students be trained with much greater flexibility. The fellows (both experimentalists and theorists) will be tapped to run discussion groups and journal clubs for the entire quantum science and engineering community as part of their fellowship. These will be three-year fellowships, with six fellows in steady state operation.
Support for Visiting Scientists, Visiting Students and Workshops.
We expect 2-3 visiting scientists annually, and 6-10 visiting students per year for durations ranging from a week to a few months. Workshops will be held twice per year on current topics in quantum science and engineering. By bringing the experts in the field to Harvard, the workshops become an integral part of the educational program of IQSE.
Seed Funding for Research.
New ideas between fields need to get launched quickly. We provide 18 months of support to start an investigation. During that time, the recipients will be obligated to seek outside support for the project (or convincingly argue that the project was a flop.) In steady state, 6 projects will be funded. |
